  • Being ultimately divine is a special trait that the lively city holds. Not only this, there’s an interesting story as to how the city got its name. Some travellers landed at a temple in Bangkok via the sea. They asked the locals the name of the place. Wat Arun, was a historic temple in the area, and used to be named Wat Makok. The locals thought they were asking what place was it. They said “Makok”. Makok later became Bangkok.!!
  • Not only is the city’s name related to a temple, but today Bangkok has some of the best temples in the world. There are more than 400 temples in Bangkok itself and are a unique part of the soul of the city.
  • The best time to visit is early morning as the weather is cooler and the temples less crowded. As the day goes by, it gets hotter and uncomfortable. So, if travelling in the day time, make sure to carry a water bottle and cap. Monks live in the temple complexes, wake up around 04:00, attend to prayers and duties and then collect food and necessities from ordinary people on the streets.
  • If you are up very early in Bangkok you will catch a glimpse of monks walking around, dressed in saffron coloured robes. This daily alms ritual (called ‘tak baht’) takes place all over Thailand and is part of the Buddhist philosophy of giving and making merit to attain a better life beyond this one. It is a beautiful ritual to observe. Most temples aren’t open after 6.00 pm and it is imperative to dress appropriately since, entry may be denied.
